Old car across the highway from Kendalia Halle.
Kendalia, Kendall County, Texas – Despite its name, Kendalia is not the seat of the county. Instead, it is a sleepy little community of fewer than a hundred residents tucked away in the middle of the Texas Hill Country.
Despite being less than an hour from San Antonio, Kendalia remains almost completely unspoiled by the advance of modern city life. At the junction of FM 473 and FM 3351, the nearest large town (Boerne) is more than half an hour away.
People have been living in the region since the 1840’s, including George Wilkins Kendall, who introduced sheep ranching to the area. In 1883, the town of Kendalia was platted, with several square blocks planned for future growth. In 1895, the post office from Curry Creek was moved to Kendalia, and the town included a mill, general store, churches and schools. But the town never really grew to any size, peaking at just a hundred residents in the forties.
Today, the main attraction of the town is Kendalia Halle, a dance hall and community center that still holds regular events after a hundred years of service. Immediately next door is the George Elbel building, recently restored. Off the main street you can find the historic community church, and the Lawhon Store (which is now a private residence). On the other end of town is the schoolhouse, which has been extensively restored as the Kendalia Library. However, the true center of town these days is the Kendalia Store, where you can buy a quick bite, grab some groceries, find out all the local news and gossip, and pick up your mail.
The only other attraction of note is the nearby Edge Falls, a local swimming hole about ten miles to the southwest along Edge Creek. However, access to Edge Falls was closed in the seventies due to liability reasons. My photos of the lower Edge Falls can be found in a separate photoset. Pictures taken April 6th and October 22nd, 2008.
